Proseminar

Course Description

Students entering the graduate program in sociology are required to take Soci 6190 in both fall and spring of their first year in the program.  The purpose of the seminar is to help you develop the skills necessary to succeed as a professional sociologist.  These skills include submitting manuscripts for publication, responding to criticisms and comments, understanding the grants process, becoming a good teacher, and effectively presenting at conferences.  Instruction is largely oral, being passed on presentations by faculty members, graduate students, and other members of the academic community. One semester of the sociology version of GRSC 7001 can be substituted for one semester of SOCI 6190.

We meet weekly for the entire academic year.  Prior to each session, you are expected to review the web page and Vita of the person who will be presenting.  You are expected to ask questions and generally participate in the discussions.  Every student must speak at least once each session.

Grading

                Pass/Fail.  Attendance is required.
