Dr. Pridemore was selected to receive the 2023 Albert J Reiss Distinguished Scholar award. This honor is presented every other year by the American Sociological Association’s Section on Crime, Law, and Deviance in recognition of the contributions to criminological understanding made by Albert J. Reiss, Jr. The award is bestowed upon a distinguished scholar in honor of a lifetime of outstanding scholarship on the sociological understanding of crime, law, and deviance. Dr. Pridemore was selected as the recipient of this prestigious award, in part, due to his groundbreaking sociological research on crime in Russia. He was one of the first scholars in the world to gain access to previously unavailable social, crime, and vital statistics data following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He employed these data to examine spatial and temporal trends of violence in Russia and to test fundamental sociological and criminological theories, both generally and as related to the impact of political, social, and economic change on geographic and temporal variation in crime rates. He is among the most distinguished scholars of international and comparative criminology and, over the course of the last 10-15 years he has authored more international, comparative, and cross-national articles in our discipline’s leading journals than almost any other scholar.
