Abstract
Drawing on in-depth interviews with 33 women involved in public education activism in the Deep South, this article explores the formation of personal, emotional, and ideological ties to an activist cause. Bridging life course theory and social movement scholarship, this study examines how experiences across the life course influence participants’ political commitments and their connections to specific causes. The findings demonstrate how activists construct narratives that link their engagement in activist work to a range of salient life events, elucidating the formation of grievances and moral shocks. The analysis highlights how life events, experiences, and relationships/networks link individuals to spaces wherein particular activist issues become relevant and how the interplay and accumulation of biographical connections strengthen participants’ resonance with social movements.
